About the event
Directed by Curtis Vowell and co-written by star Sophie Henderson, Workmates is a charming Kiwi romantic dramedy inspired by real-life experiences. Lucy (Henderson) and Tom (Matt Whelan) are best mates running a tiny, struggling theatre in Tāmaki Makaurau. When an accident forces them to close, Lucy realises she’ll do anything to save the theatre and maybe hold on to the friend she might secretly love.
Critics praise Henderson’s performance as “relatable, frustrating, funny and compellingly human.” At the same time, the film doubles as a love letter to Auckland’s iconic theatre spaces, from the humble Basement to the grand Aotea Centre.
