About the event
Arriving as part of the 2025 Aotearoa French Film Festival, Bolero sweeps viewers into the richly textured world of Maurice Ravel a composer whose music is played somewhere on the planet every fifteen minutes, yet whose inner life was anything but effortless.
The film lingers in the smoky glow of 1920s Paris, where Ravel finds himself tasked with creating a passionate new score for the magnetic dancer Ida Rubenstein. Instead of inspiration, he’s met with creative paralysis and the sting of being dismissed by his contemporaries.
What unfolds is an intimate portrait of a man leaning on the people who steady him: pianist Marguerite Long, steadfast friend Cipa, and Cipa’s sister Misia, a source of affection, tension, and quiet unravelling.
