This offbeat romantic comedy marked the dazzling debut of Australian filmmaker Baz Luhrmann and kicks off his famous ‘Red Curtain trilogy,’ which also includes Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge!. The film follows Scott Hastings (Paul Mercurio), a champion ballroom dancer with a rebellious streak. Rejecting the rigid rules of competitive ballroom, Scott sets out to create his own unique style and choreography — a bold move that ruffles feathers in the dance community.

Enter Fran (Tara Morice), a shy beginner and self-described ‘ugly duckling’ with the courage to ask Scott to be her dance partner after his unorthodox style sends his usual partner packing. Together, this unlikely duo sets their sights on the Australian Pan Pacific Championships, determined to prove the Ballroom Confederation wrong when they claim, “there are no new steps.”
