About the event
This Matariki, a heartfelt in memoriam screening, honours the life of James Cross, with Florian Habicht’s beloved 2001 documentary James & Isey. Aroha-filled and quietly powerful, the film follows the lives of James, a Northland tohunga (shaman) and his extraordinary 99-year-old mother, Isey, as she approaches a century on Earth.
Set on their small farm in Kawakawa, James & Isey is a celebration of whānau, spirit, and devotion. Descendants of Ngāti Manu, the Bird People, James and Isey share a bond like no other. For 20 years, James lovingly cared for his mum, calling on the spirit world to help her reach 100.
