About the event
Arriving as part of this year’s Whānau Mārama New Zealand International Film Festival, Patricia Font’s [film] draws us into a village classroom on the brink of the Spanish Civil War, a place where hope flickers in the unlikeliest of moments.
In 1935, charismatic teacher Antoni Benaiges steps into a tiny Catalonian schoolroom and quietly turns everything on its head. His progressive ways are miles away from the rigid teachings of the local priest open up the world for a group of children who’ve never dared to imagine much beyond the hills of Burgos. He even makes a promise that feels almost mythic: to take them to the ocean for the very first time.
